the BH commission process e x p l a i n e d AT THE CLIENT END: (1) the intention is to commission something from someone? (2) usually client thoughts have been materialised into notes, ideas and sometimes even a design has been worked out. Enough to commence a dialogue with the maker BARBARA WANTED TO ADD HERE THAT SHE ENCOURAGES STIMULI OF EVERY KIND, PRECURSORS & EXPECTATIONS CAREFULLY CONSIDERED. (3) article might include existing materials, sometimes even gems! (4) every expectation is driven by a deadline so time frame has to be considered (Barbara's as well) (5) finally, how far the purse will stretch AT THE MAKER END: (A) someone has a commission intention first meeting should stimulate discussion around the purpose of the object... there's a set of questions to help client identify their own precursor... (B) function of object historical precedent of object type reflected upon... gap in understanding clearly defined... copy caution explained... uniquely designed object becomes more clear... (C) object clearly defined 25 years of techniques explained & shared with client... 3D resource, including library at hand... absence of fully realised drawing explained... (D) commission budget discussion to research to design is usually one third of amount charged... for the make, add another third... for materials make up the rest...consider starting price of $1500.00 (e.g. 18ct gold wedding ring) if that's too dear...a cheaper spin-off-from-range can be accommodated... if you want 10 sets of bronze door handles, lets talk! valuation and documentation will be provided... (E) object materials different material options explored... materials decided upon after budget breakdown agreed... full disclosure on the sourcing of materials and gems... subsequent presentation(s) and final selection made... (F) production time frame scheduling locked in... object in progress, workshop view by negotiation... payment arrangements entered into, usually 30% deposit with balance paid in exchange of goods... PS. no deadline no action (G) liability any materials supplied by client will be stored in the safe, handled with due care and attention but the full responsibility must rest with the client... Client is requested to arrange full insurance of goods held at Barbara's Studio (to be on the safe side)... |
